NZCT made a generous grant of $50,000 towards the construction costs of the Arrowtown Community & Sports Centre. It’s an important donation, says Secretary Simon Spark. “We have achieved the total funds now and we can start the construction.”
The Arrowtown Community & Sports Centre is going to be a facility many community groups can use. The rapid growth of Arrowtown has left existing facilities stretched. It will include a bar and kitchen facilities, changing rooms, showers, toilets and three adjoining function spaces. It will cater for sports clubs, community groups and private functions.
Simon Spark says one of the next steps is finalising the construction process with the Queenstown Lakes District Council. “We will appoint a construction company from the three involved tenderers in pricing this project. Hopefully construction can start later this year.”
Simon’s major role in this project has been raising funds for the Centre. “This project has been nine years in the making. It has consumed a lot of my time and energy, but it is now going to be a reality. I like the fact that I have done something for the Arrowtown community in a small way. It will be a facility we can all be proud of.”
It will take at least until April/May 2018 before the Arrowtown Community & Sports Centre is completely finished. “We hope for greater community engagement around the facility. It will definitely service the needs of the people in Arrowtown for the next few years.”
