After many years of planning and fundraising, Bay Of Plenty District Rugby League (BOPDRL) is pleased to confirm that floodlights have finally been installed at Rotorua's Puketawhero Park.
The park's number one and number two fields have been lit, with six poles (each with nine lights) installed on each pitch.
The lighting means games can be played in the evenings, enabling more games and more options for players. Previously it was difficult to fit all the required training sessions and games into daylight hours at the park - particularly on Saturdays and Sundays when field time was at a premium. Now, BOPDRL can offer a wider variety of game and practice times - dramatically improving the ability of getting teams together.
The organisation is hopeful that recent upgrades to the park's toilet block and the new lighting will result in more rugby league events being held in Rotorua. The local league clubs have some very talented players participating in their youth grades, and the improved facilities will encourage more people to get and stay involved with rugby league.
NZCT is proud to have contributed $250,000 towards this lighting upgrade.
