The senior leadership of Nayland College was thrilled to hear that NZCT had approved a funding application of $50,000 towards replacing their aging bitumen tennis courts with an all-weather multi-sport turf surface.
Principal Daniel Wilson says NZCT’s grant is critical in realising the plans of the school to install a new all-weather multi-sport turf. “The current tennis and netball courts have not been upgraded since first installed almost 50 years ago. They are in serious need of repair with the surface cracking and they are extremely slippery in parts.”
According to Daniel, the current facility is substandard for a modern school and community environment and has now become dangerous for students. Several serious injuries have been recorded over the last two years.
“The quality of a school reflects the quality of its relationship with the community it serves. It is part of our vision and focus to provide safe and high-quality sporting facilities for our students. The facility is also available to the local community who will have after-school hours access. It is a continuation of our genuine partnership with our families/whanau and local community.”
The installation of the turf is due to start in late April with the anticipated date for completion in Term 2 of 2018. Then it will be ready for netball, basketball, tennis, futsal and sprints.
“The new multi-sport turf surface will allow students and the local community to utilise a world-class facility all year round, including during wet weather when other surfaces may be closed. We are confident that the facility will be fully utilised throughout the year and will help increase the numbers of students participating in both our own and community sport and recreation activities,” ends Daniel.
