New velodrome

New velodrome

NZCT is a proud supporter of the Avantidrome, which was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on 12 April 2014. This impressive new facility, located just out of Cambridge, is a world class UCI Category 1 velodrome (and is one of only two velodromes in New Zealand).

Bike NZ, Triathlon NZ, High Performance Sport NZ and the University of Waikato will be based at the Avantidrome.  It will be used as a training facility for cyclists and for events such as the New Zealand National Championships, Oceania Championships and UCI World events.

Its proximity to Rowing NZ’s high performance centre at Lake Karapiro, will also benefit local rowers (who cycle as a form of cross-training). And although it will be used by Olympians and world champions, the velodrome will also cater for complete beginners, enabling a wide range of the local community to enjoy and participate in the sport.

A number of cycling programmes and activities will be run at the Avantidrome, including Mums and Tots, Over 50s, Ladies Only, as well as development programmes for youth and training programmes for emerging cyclists.

NZCT’s mission is to return the funds we generate to local communities, principally through amateur sport.  We are pleased to be able to contribute to this world class facility, knowing it will serve cyclists, of all ages and abilities for many generations to come.
