Christmas in Taranaki came early this year and the community will once again be able to enjoy a spectacular show, thanks to a NZCT grant of $20,000 to the 2020 Christmas at the Bowl event. The annual extravaganza is held at the TSB Bowl in Brooklands and this funding was crucial to help meet the costs of providing professional sound and lighting equipment.
Secretary/Treasurer Julianne Lamb commented: “This iconic annual community event celebrates the best talent the province has to offer. Bringing together performers from all spectrums in a great seasonal feast of song, dance, and festive entertainment, culminating in the largest fireworks display of the year. The support of NZCT each year allows the Christmas At The Bowl Trust confidence to stage a professional show for over 12,000 people - family, friends and travellers alike - all enjoying an event for the community, by the community. Gold coin donations ensure this is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy a night out regardless of the financial burdens which they may be facing, especially after the trials of this year, and the NZCT contribution allows first-class sound and lighting to add to the atmosphere. A fantastic festive experience, Christmas At The Bowl is grateful for the ongoing support of NZCT and proud of its family and community focus.”
Originally staged within Pukekura Park, the Christmas Carols run by Youth For Christ started over 20 years ago, but larger and larger crowds each year meant that a larger venue had to be found. With the backing of New Plymouth Brass Band, Christmas At The Bowl held its inaugural production in 1999 and the Trust was formed in 2005 to facilitate the ongoing financial administration. A working committee is formed each year to liaise with the director and ensure all running aspects of the show are catered for.
