An injection of good news has come for the earthquake-hit communities of Waiau and Kaikoura as Christmas approaches and summer temperatures soar. One of two temporary swimming pools is en route to Waiau after being shipped in to Lyttelton yesterday.
PoolsINSchoolZ Founder Ian Calhaem, who has flown in from Auckland to help the communities install the two pools over the Christmas period, said it was rewarding to finally be able to collect one of the pools. "So many people have been involved to get the pools ready and it's great one of them is on its way to Waiau. The second one will dock on Christmas Day and be delivered to Kaikoura on the 27th."
New Zealand Community Trust offered its support to the joint project by way of funding to cover freight, and operating and maintenance costs for the two pools.
NZCT chief executive Mike Knell said the trustees were delighted to be able to help youth and the wider community. "Within 24 hours of first hearing of the issues, and following the stringent processes required, we were able to award the $25,000 so desperately needed. To be able to respond in a collaborative way with council, Sport Tasman and others is a fantastic outcome for the region in its time of need."
