NZCT AIMS GAMES KICK OFF
NZCT AIMS Games 28 August - 2 September 2011
As one of the largest funders of amateur sport in New Zealand, NZCT is proud to support the 8th annual NZCT AIMS Games for school children nationwide which was held in Tauranga from 28 August - 2 September.
NZCT chief executive Mike Knell would like to acknowledge the contribution of local NZCT publicans who, by raising funds in their gaming rooms, have made it possible for the trust to support this event.
About the Games
The Games have involved 4600 intermediate-aged children from 120 schools, participating in 15 different sports during one action packed week. Involving everything from water polo to indoor bowls, these Games were the biggest, most exciting yet. In fact, the Games are so popular that the local council recently gave them ‘flagship’ status to recognise the growing importance they have on the local economy.
The Games’ opening ceremony was the first event held in Tauranga’s new indoor sport and exhibition centre - TECT Arena at Baypark. Competitors and their supporters were officially welcomed to the Games by Olympian Rob Waddell. As well as individual and team personal bests, competitors were vying for two top awards:
Team Mates Cup
This is the NZCT AIMS Games premiere award which was presented to the top school for overall excellence. Congratulations to this year's winner: Matamata Intermediate.
Fair Play Award
The NZCT AIMS Games promotes and rewards fair play. Good sport is about a positive attitude from competitors, coaches, managers and supporters. The school demonstrating the best overall fair play was: Ilminster Intermediate from Gisborne.
While Tauranga Intermediate dominated the medal table.
As well as the sports, the Games offered a number of well organised social activities for both adults and children. These enhanced the Games experience and helped participants develop friendships and celebrate their successes.
