NZCT CHAMBER MUSIC CONTEST
Making music across the country
Although NZCT is widely known as being a sporting trust, we also fund a number of worthwhile community and arts initiatives. One event we’re proud to have a long association with is the NZCT Chamber Music Contest. Now in its 46th year, this national music competition involves young people from all corners of the country playing, singing and composing to their best ability.
This year nearly 500 secondary school students entered the contest, competing at 15 regional music contests throughout June. This weekend, 15 – 16 July, the semi-finals and finals are being held in Hamilton.
The NZCT Chamber Music Contest provides an opportunity for talented musicians to showcase their skills. As well as musicality, participants are judged on presentation and deportment.
“The purpose of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest is to encourage young musicians regardless of standard or experience, to perform together and strive towards excellence”, says CEO Euan Murdoch. “The contest also aims to provide an opportunity for musical activities within schools to have a link with the wider community at both a local and national level.”
NZCT Chief Executive Mike Knell says the Contest attracts a lot of interest from participants and helps raise awareness and support for chamber music.
“We’re pleased to play a part in bringing this event to life,” says Mr Knell. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the publicans who helped us raise the funds for this event, by operating NZCT gaming lounges in their pubs. Without them, we wouldn’t be in a position to provide financial support to NZ Chamber Music - and this wonderful event may not have taken place.
“Congratulations once again to all the organisers, the musicians, coaches and supporters who have made this contest the great success that it is. And good luck to all the finalists!”
