NZCT KEEPS ROTORUA LOCALS AFLOAT

4 June 2008

The Te Awara Paddlers waka ama club recently became the proud owner of two new outrigger canoes. The two-person canoes, funded by NZCT, are a great addition to the 35 member Lake Rotoiti club.

"We are so excited to have these new boats," says waka ama coordinator Nigel Baker. "They're going to make a world of difference to us. Before we got them, we only had a two-person canoe and an old slow six-person canoe. A lot of our training sessions involved members sitting on shore waiting for their turn in the waka!

"It's hard to keep up your enthusiasm when you're not even able to get in the water to train. But thanks to NZCT, we've got lots more capacity. Now we have our new boats, we can't wiat to get them in the water."

NZCT Regional Advisory Committee chairman, Gary Cookson, says NZCT was delighted to be able to help.

"NZCT is the largest supporter of amateur sport in New Zealand and we love helping people get active."

Mr Cookson says NZCT aims to return money it raises through gaming machines back to the local community in which it's raised, and thanks the NZCT venues in Rotorua for helping make this grant possible:
