PORIRUA VIKINGS COME OUT ON TOP
Rugby league role model
Congratulations to the Porirua Vikings Rugby League Club which was named the ‘Grassroots Club of the Year’ at the NZ Rugby League Awards held in early November.
The club has 903 members and is the biggest, most successful league club in the Wellington region. What’s more, the club is growing in popularity. Part of this growth is attributed to the fact the club doesn’t charge membership subscriptions for juniors/schoolboys. This removes some of the financial barriers which could otherwise restrict members of this low socio economic community from participating in sport.
The club is also credited with making a positive difference in the local community, by providing life skills and good role models. Its 450 registered juniors/school boy members (aged from five to 17 years) make up the club’s 24 teams. And it’s a real community affair - more than 80 volunteers give their time coaching and managing the junior/school boy teams. The club lost this year’s grand final by a field goal, but had won its previous three games.
NZCT is proud to support the Porirua Vikings and we congratulate all members for winning this fantastic award.
