POSITIVE CONSERVATION OUTCOME
Project Kiwi Trust - saving the Kiwi
NZCT is a proud supporter of Project Kiwi Trust whose work is increasing the survival rate of Kiwi chicks on the Kuaotumu Peninsula from a mere 5% to an impressive 70%. The trust achieves this by hatching Kiwi chicks in a predator-free environment and then returning them to the wild when they are big and strong enough to survive.
To find their nests, the trust workers and volunteers track male Kiwi (who do the egg incubating). This is no mean feat - with nearly 3000 hectares of land being actively monitored. When the birds’ nests are located, workers wait until eggs are laid and then uplift them, taking them to the safety of the Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua. The eggs are incubated until they hatch, and the chicks are reared until they are old enough to fend for themselves in their natural environment.
NZCT funding helps pay for the Kiwi monitoring component of this work – and we are thrilled with the positive outcomes being achieved by everyone involved in this exciting project.
