NZCT funding helps Te Aratu Trust keep people active and connected
New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded $7,978 to Rotorua’s Te Aratu Trust to support physical activity programmes for people with disabilities, helping deliver a range of activities including gym sessions, swimming, badminton, and community recreation for up to 80 people each year.
Tumuaki Julia Fonotia says “We provide education and community participation activities for people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, as well as those experiencing mental health challenges. Our ākonga can attend up to 30 hours of free classes each week, with physical activities that support their fitness, wellbeing, and social connection.”
The organisation has recently invested in upgrading its facilities, improving safety, security, and accessibility, while also reducing operational costs. This funding helps sustain those improvements and supports continued access to inclusive, structured activities year-round.
26-year-old participant Mariah, says, “I lost weight, the bike machine at Blaze Gym is easy, makes me feel good. I enjoy the offsite activities; it helps with my confidence.”
Mahia, 56-year-old participant adds, “I like meeting new people, having friends, and the gym.”
Irene, 49-year-old participant says, “I like swimming at the aquatic centre; it helps me stay fit and lose weight.”
NZCT GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications Ben Hodges adds,
“We’re delighted to support the Te Aratu whānau to get active and stay connected. This funding backs a fantastic kaupapa while also supporting the local economy as the grant is spent locally. NZCT can fund this community good thanks to our fundraising partnerships with Kaspers Sports Bar and Mo’s Bar.
