New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded $15,000 to Bell Block Community Pool Society (BBCPS) to purchase a fleet of aquatic exercise bikes, a storage container, and to complete minor site works, enabling locals to take part in instructor-led aqua cycling sessions, bringing a new wave of low-impact fitness to the community.
Chairman Ross Beaven says, “Aqua-biking is fast becoming one of the most popular forms of water-based exercise worldwide – and for good reason. The benefits are low impact with high rewards. Exercising in water reduces pressure on the joints and muscles, making it ideal for people of all ages, including those recovering from injury. It improves circulation, increases strength and endurance as well as giving a good calorie burn!”
Beaven says the aim is to establish an aqua bike programme three times a week, led by a certified instructor, to provide New Plymouth residents of all ages with an affordable and enjoyable way to stay active. Based at the Methanex Bell Block Aquatic Centre it will be designed as a community wellbeing project where workouts are tailored to individual goals and abilities.
Pool Manager Candice Kowelewski says, “These specially designed bikes allow participants to cycle in the water, combining a high energy cardio workout with the gentle, low-impact resistance of the pool. Sessions have just commenced, giving locals the chance to try out a global fitness trend right here in Bell Block.”
NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges says, “It’s great to see a small community pool come up with fresh, healthy ideas that get people moving and connecting. NZCT can fund this community good thanks to the fundraising partnerships we share with hospitality venues via their responsible gaming lounges.”
