New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has granted $20,000 to fund mobile light towers with generators for the Norwest Sport and Community Hub in Christchurch, ensuring increasing training and game opportunities during the dark winter months.
Chairman Samuel Watt says “For many years, there’s been little or no investment in North-West Christchurch sports facilities. With the move away from single entity clubs to multi-purpose shared services, the ‘hub’ concept has been successfully implemented in many other locations across Aotearoa. Our members had struggled with training and playing during the winter months due to the lack of floodlit fields and open spaces. Thanks to this generous grant from NZCT, these mobile towers are an easy and cheaper way to light portions of our training fields for night-time practices and games.”
The Norwest Sport and Community Hub is a sport, recreation and community-focused organisation providing access to quality shared facilities, recreation, and social services through partnerships with local organisations. The Hub consists of two rugby and two football clubs.
A Nomads United club member adds “These new lighting towers mean that our evening football training can be spread over all the available grassed surfaces during winter as these previously dark surfaces will now be clearly illuminated. This will also help to ease the workloads on the fields and maintain better quality playing surfaces in the future.”
NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, adds “As Christchurch continues to grow, sport facilities are coming under increasing pressure. So we’re delighted to have helped the Hub secure portable lights to help extend playable hours and open up new winter ground options. Our grant wouldn’t be possible without the responsible gaming partnership we share with our Christchurch venues.”
