NZCT’s $27k Grant Helps Keep Ōtaki School Safe in the Sun

New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded a $27,029 grant to Ōtaki School to install shade sails over its sandpit and outdoor play area, providing UV protection over one of the school's busiest outdoor spaces and helping keep tamariki safer in the summer sun.

Principal Rauru Walker says, “Tamariki at Ōtaki School will soon be able to enjoy outdoor play more safely this summer thanks to NZCT's generous funding. Our outdoor play areas are a big part of how our children learn, connect, and grow, and the new shade sails will give students a safe, shaded space during peak heat hours.”

The school's new sandpit has quickly become a favourite play area, but with no overhead cover, students are exposed to direct sun during warmer months. The new shade sails will protect the sandpit and nearby outdoor spaces, with local contractors engaged and installation expected before summer.

Henare, Year 5 student says, “It gets too hot to play in the sandpit in summer. Shade sails will be awesome!”

Whaea Louise, Year 3-4 teacher says, “It'll be amazing to be able to take my class out here for lessons in the heat of the day.”

NZCT General Manager of Grants, Marketing and Communications Ben Hodges says, “We're pleased to help Ōtaki School’s tamariki have a safer and more comfortable space to enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year. This investment is made possible through NZCT's partnership with the Family Hotel Otaki, whose gaming room funds community good across the region.”
