NZCT Supports South Island Secondary School Junior Netball Tournament
New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded an $11,500 grant to the South Island Secondary School (SISS) Junior Netball Tournament Inc helping the next generation of netballers affordably compete for their schools.
Sharon Manson, Tournament Manager says, “The tournament, which has been running for more than 25 years, was traditionally held outdoors at Hagley Park. For many years, players and supporters braved South Island winter conditions, with rain, wind and cold temperatures. In 2024 the tournament moved indoors to Nga Puna Wai, and this has made a significant difference for players, officials and spectators . However, the cost of venue hire increased by more than $10,000. This generous funding from NZCT will ensure that we won’t have to increase entry fees for teams and players and can avoid passing additional costs on to schools or families.”
The tournament plays a key role in player, coach and umpire development, providing a competitive three-day environment that mirrors higher‑level netball. It welcomes up to 96 teams across three grades, offering participants from all over the South Island a valuable opportunity to gain experience, hone their skills, and connect with peers.
Player, Amelie Martin, says, “SISS junior netball gave me a great start in my netball career – the opportunity to experience competitive tournament play, multiple games in a day and having to adapt to tournament situations. It’s also a great chance to connect with players from schools all over the South Island and create lifelong memories and friendships.”
Umpire, Maddison Scanlon, adds, “Netball tournaments are invaluable for umpiring development, as they provide fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments that build confidence, decision‑making, and consistency on court.”
NZCT’s General Manager of Grants, Marketing and Communications Ben Hodges says, “We’re huge supporters of netball and sport in general – especially for young people. We even put $1m into the construction of the Netball Sports Centre where this event is being held. We’re pleased to help keep costs down so schools and whānau can focus on the sport and the experience. NZCT can fund this community good thanks to the fundraising partnerships we share with local hospitality venues via their responsible gaming lounges.”
