Brooklyn Street Festival kicks off with help from NZCT

NZCT has awarded $4,020 to the Re-new Communities Trust to help support the Brooklyn Street Festival which kicks off on Saturday the 11th of November.

“This is a key moment in the year to celebrate our amazing neighbourhood. It gives local groups the chance to actively collaborate and brings the entire community together in a spirit-lifting environment that caters to well over 2,000 people.” - Scottie Reeve, Re-New Director.

Festival Administrator Joanna Knox says -

Two Todman is partnering with Brooklyn Community Centre to revive the Brooklyn Community Festival. While many community festivals in Wellington are similar, Brooklyn's uniquely takes place late in the afternoon and early evening.

Beginning at 3 PM, live music performances, bouncy castles, an outdoor movie screening, and affordable dining options are on offer. Three hours later the festival changes gear, transforming Harrison St into an outdoor restaurant space where local businesses, food trucks, and restaurants display their finest products. A stellar line-up of well-known Wellington musicians (including Ingrid & The Ministers, Fun & Funner!, and Anika Moa) will be performing until 10 PM.

This financial support from NZCT will allow us to revive the Festival for the first time since 2009, when it had to shut down due to the rising costs of road closures. It brings together over thirty community groups not only on the day itself, but also over the many months of intense collaboration and coordination leading up to the event. This planning process involves a huge number of artists, musicians, local businesses, and community groups. Strong and enduring relationships are built between all of us, which is crucial to creating a more resilient and connected community.

Two Todman is an initiative of Re-new Communities, a faith-based organisation that seeks to renew local communities by creating spaces of belonging. Alongside faith communities such as Brooklyn Anglicans, Lyall Bay Community Church, and Blueprint Church, we also run The Wellington Free Store, Two Todman Community Space, and an emergency accommodation service in Central Wellington.
