NZCT awarded a grant of $15,000 to Ōtūmoetai College to help fund their summer sports team’s attendance at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Summer Tournaments. This funding contributed to accommodation, van hire, fuel, uniforms, and equipment.

Sports Coordinator Mianna Laing from Ōtūmoetai College goes on to say "The College is a co-educational Year 9-13 school based in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. The opportunity for our sports teams to take part in the National Championships is extremely important to the sporting culture in our school."

"Participation throughout these tournaments encourages our students to build relationships, leadership skills, and team comradery both within our college and alongside other secondary school players. This inspires not only our students but also the wider school community to live an active lifestyle beyond the realm of school. It instils in them the confidence to transfer their physical talent to other opportunities, be it in sport or beyond."

"After three years of cancellations due to the pandemic, it was extremely special that the 2023 NZSS Summer Tournament was able to go ahead. Multiple teams of different codes competed throughout the country, from canoe slalom in Tekapo to volleyball in Palmerston North. Our athletes all had a great time playing the sport they love and we are incredibly proud of the way they represented the College."

“We got knocked out in the quarter-finals, but playing with the team was still a lot of fun.”
